   Installing a Dial Up Networking Connection

  • NOTE: This step-by-step walkthrough will instruct you on how to properly set up a

    Dial Up Connection to your ISP. Please be sure you have your Windows 95/98

    CD-ROM or diskettes available before you go through this process.

    Please take note that the screen shots provided here are from a Windows 98 machine.

    However, the functionality is the same as Windows 95.

    Install Dial-up Networking

    1. Double-click My Computer on your desktop.

    2. Double-click the Control Panel icon.

    3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

    4. Click the Windows Setup tab.

  • Click on the Communications component.

  • (Do not check or uncheck the box)

  • Click the Details... button.

  • DUN Window

     

  • Put a check in the box next to Dial-Up Networking. (NOTE: If Dial Up Networking is already
    checked, proceed to Add a Dial-Up Adapter)

  • Click the OK button.

  • Click the OK button again.

  • Windows 95 will prompt you for your installation diskettes or CD.

  • Wait for Dial-Up Networking to install. This may take a few minutes.

  • When you are told to restart, click the OK button.

  • If the computer does not automatically restart, click the Start button and choose Shut Down.

  • Select Restart the computer?

  • Click the Yes button.

  • Wait for Windows 95 to restart.

  • Add a Dial-up Adapter

    1. Click the Start button point to Settings and choose Control Panel.

    2. Double click the Network icon.

    3. Network Configuration

       

    4. Select the Configuration tab. (NOTE: If you see the Dial Up Adapter Already installed,
      proceed to Add TCP/IP)

    5. Click the Add button.

    6. Add Network Component

    7. Select Adapter.

    8. Click the Add button.

    9. Select Dial Up Adapter

    10. From the Manufactures: list, choose Microsoft.

    11. From the Network Adapters: list, choose Dial-up Adapter.

    12. Click the OK button.

    Add TCP/IP
    (NOTE: If TCP/IP is already installed, proceed to Add Client for Microsoft Networks)

    1. Click the Add button.

    2. Select Protocol.

    3. Click the Add button.

    4. Select Protocol

    5. From the Manufactures: list, choose Microsoft.

    6. From the Network Protocol: list, choose TCP/IP.

    7. Click the OK button.

    Add Client for Microsoft Networks
    (NOTE: If TCP/IP is already installed, proceed to Create a New Dial-up Networking Connection)

    1. Click the Add button.

    2. Select Client.

    3. Click the Add button.

    4. Select Client

    5. From the Manufacturers: list, select Microsoft.

    6. From the Network Clients: list, select Client for Microsoft Networks.

    7. Click the OK button.

    Create a New Dial-Up Networking Connection

    1. Double-click the My Computer icon.

    2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder.

    3. Dial Up Networking Window

    4. Double-click the Make New Connection icon.

    5. Make New Connection

    6. Under Type a name for the computer you are dialing, type Internet Dialup

    7. Click the Configure button.

    8. Configure your modem

    9. Check that the appropriate speed for your modem (for 14.4 modems use 19200, for 28.8 modems
      use 38400 and for 33.6 and 56K modems, use 57600.)

    10. Make sure that Only connect at this speed is not checked.

    11. Click the OK button.

    12. Click the Next button.

    13. Choose your local number

    14. In the Area code and Telephone number text boxes, type your local Dial Internet access
      number 595-0002, or whatever it may be. Remember to check with your local telephone
      company to make sure that the number you choose is a local toll-free call.

    15. Click the Next button.

    16. All done, now ready to connect!

    17. Click the Finish button.

    18. Click the Dial Internet icon.

    19. From the menu bar, click File and select Properties.

    21. Click the Server Type button.

    23. For Type of Dial-Up Server, select PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.

    24. Uncheck Log on to network.

    25. Check Enable software compression.

    26. Uncheck Require encrypted password.

    27. Uncheck NetBEUI.

    28. Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible.

    29. Check TCP/IP.

    30. Click the TCP/IP Settings button.

    32. Click on Server assigned IP address button.

    33. Click on Specify Name Server Addresses

    34. For the Primary DNS enter: 216.178.151.2

    35. For the Secondary DNS enter: 216.178.151.3

    36. Leave the Primary and Secondary WINS as they are. (0.0.0.0)

    37. Uncheck Use IP header compression and Check Use default gateway on remote network.

    38. Click the OK button.

    39. Click the OK button.

    40. Click the OK button to close the window.
